The most common causes are a low refrigerant charge from a leak, a dirty or iced-over evaporator coil, a failed capacitor, or a blocked filter choking the airflow. Several of these look identical from inside the house, which is why the fault needs to be measured rather than guessed. Turn the system off if it is icing over and call us.
How often should an air conditioner be serviced in El Paso?
Twice a year: once before the cooling season and once before the heating season. In a desert climate, dust and long idle periods do more damage than heavy use, so an annual-only schedule tends to miss what the off-season left behind.
Should I repair or replace my air conditioner?
It depends on the age of the unit, what the repair costs against the value of the system, and whether it uses a refrigerant being phased out. We give free comfort consultations in El Paso and will tell you plainly if a repair is the better call. Nobody here is paid to sell you a system you do not need.
What is the difference between refrigerated air and a swamp cooler?
Refrigerated air is central air conditioning: it uses refrigerant to remove heat from the air inside the house and works the same in dry or humid weather. A swamp cooler, or evaporative cooler, pulls outside air across wet pads and cools by evaporation. Swamp coolers use less electricity and suit dry heat, but they struggle during monsoon season.
How do I know what size air conditioner my home needs?
It comes from a load calculation, not a rule of thumb per square foot. Square footage, insulation, window area and orientation, ceiling height and duct condition all feed into it. Oversized systems short cycle and leave the house humid; undersized ones never catch up in August.
Why does my furnace smell like burning when I first turn it on?
Dust that settled on the heat exchanger over the summer burns off the first time the furnace runs, and the smell should fade within an hour or so. If it persists, or smells electrical or like burning plastic, shut the system off and call us.
How often should I change my air filter?
Every one to three months for a standard one-inch filter, and more often during dust storm season or if you have pets. Desert dust loads filters faster than the packaging assumes.
